What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is a slow, gentle style of yoga focused on deep rest and nervous-system healing rather than strength, flexibility, or flow.

Instead of moving through many poses, you usually hold a small number of very comfortable postures for a long time(often 5–20 minutes each), fully supported by props like bolsters, blankets, blocks, and straps. The unique positions of support along with long holds creates an environment where the body can recover from stress, fatigue, illness, overtraining, or the demands of everyday life.

Although the practice appears simple, truly skillful restorative yoga requires thoughtful observation, precise prop placement, and an understanding of anatomy, physiology, and nervous system regulation.

Restorative Yoga is beneficial for all levels of students, as it provides a balance to our active, often hectic lifestyles. It is accessible for those recovering from injury, and nurturing for women during every phase of their life—pregnancy, monthly menstrual cycles, menopause. The restorative practice reduces anxiety, stress, and high blood pressure, and nourishes the organic body, especially kidney and adrenal function. It’s one of the most important practices to incorporate into your weekly regimen. The intention is not to stretch muscles, but instead to relax them. Like Shavasana, restoratives are the ultimate practice of surrender. You train the muscles, mind, and emotions to let go, and this releases tension in the nervous system, calms the mind, and opens the potential for change.

What People Are Saying

  • I love how Rutu approaches teaching with expert training, bringing care and intention into her classes and sequencing, but is never heavy handed. It's a special balance. And she never seems in a rush, there is an easy flow and you feel led and held in the practice the entire time. The teaching still comes across with lightness and ease, and she also gives students space to figure it out of their own.

  • Accessibility is one of Rutu's strength...beginners as well as advanced practitioners can walk into a class and get just as much out of it. Her disposition is soft and inviting, her instruction is clear and well paced.

  • I appreciate the feeling of being cared for and masterfully lead through a creative and effective yoga sequence with steady, focused facilitation--both serious and light. The care and quality of the instruction, the vibe of the studio--intimate and private, welcoming and safe, non-commercialized or busy.
